Energy
Energy is the force that makes our way of living possible. It heats our homes, fuels our cars and powers the computer you’re using right now as you read this. For years and years, we’ve relied on energy sources that are environmentally destructive and now, we’re paying the price for our actions. Our dependence on fossil fuels like coal, oil and natural gas has led us into trouble in many ways from climate change to environmental pollution to national security threats.
Clean and green technology is no longer a futuristic idea. It is already here available! Wind energy, solar power, hydropower and geothermal power are all examples of renewable energy that are environmentally friendly and non-polluting. It’s frustrating to know that even though these technologies exist, most of us are still stuck using power derived from fossil fuels, the same as people did over a hundred years ago.
We also need to start thinking about not just where our energy comes from but how we use the energy we have. It might take a while for all of us to find our homes powered by green energy. In the meantime, simple changes like switching to the latest and most efficient vehicles, appliances and electronics would allow each of us to cut our individual energy use down by about two thirds.
Why should we keep using outdated and dirty energy sources, gas-guzzling cars and electricity-hogging appliances, when so many alternatives are out there? It’s up to us to demand new options because the status quo—and the environmental destruction that it’s causing—won’t change on its own.
