Recently, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation put out a call to action for our supporters to tell us about what life is like having a Pit Bull in their family. This beautiful “breed” of dog is made up of several different breeds including the American Pit Bull Terrier, American Staffordshire Terrier and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. A Pit Bull can also be described as any type of dog with a muscular build, small eyes or larger head. The term “Pit Bull” has sparked all sorts of emotion in people, from those trying to protect these dogs, to those who fear them and have tried to ban the dogs altogether.
According to realpitbull.com, “Considering that there were an estimated 53,000,000 dogs in the U.S., and assuming that pit bulls make up 10% of that population, there would be approximately 5.3 million pit bulls in our society.”
But what is it like to own a Pit Bull? What is it like to have them in your home every day? What prejudice have people experienced? The response we received at ISF from Pit Bull owners was wonderful.
In the next four weeks, we wanted to share with you what life is like with a Pit Bull…told by ISF supporters who have a rescued Pit Bull in their life.
Meet Loie and her rescued Pit Bull Raleigh:
What is Raleigh’s rescue story?
“Raleigh was located at the "Animal Shelter of the Wood River Valley". She was brought up here from southern Idaho in hopes of being adopted. I went on to adopt her after never having a “pocket pittie” before. What a great dog!”
What are some of Raleigh’s best personality traits?
“She is the best dog I have ever had, and I've had some amazing dogs. She has so much personality and is very loving. Who ever said dogs don't like to hug, hasn't met her.”
What sort of BSL or prejudice have you encountered because Raleigh has been labeled a Pit Bull?
“As far as prejudice goes, I see it whenever we are out. Someone kicked at her the other day when we were out walking in front of my house. She just wants to play and is very well-mannered. “
According to Loie, “I was once a person who said “how could anyone own a Pit Bull?” Education and being around these dogs has changed my mind. I am hoping to help in the future to change other people's minds as well!”
